| UMMA History |
| |
| The United Minority Media Association Incorporated (UMMA) was founded by M.C.
Richardson, May 11, 1974 and incorporated in the State of Missouri on August 28,1974.
Former KMBC-TV Reporter, Tim Richardson, provided key ideas to form the organization.
UMMA's twenty-one charter members moved swiftly to create a network system for minority,
media professionals and students. |
| In 1982, UMMA became an affiliate of the National Black Media Coalition. The two
organizations worked together to advocate change in the practices of the mainstream
media. The organizations addressed the following issues: |
- Equal employment opportunities for minorities in all aspects and levels of the communications and media industry.
- Quality news, programming and representation of minorities in the electronic and print media.
- Distribution of mainstream advertising dollars to minority media outlets.
Today, UMMA continues the following:
- Provides scholarships
- Monitor business and hiring practices of local and national media companies
- Host annual conferences, fairs and seminars to educate and empower media professionals and students.
